Tampa, FL for the win (and for all of us who are too old for South Beach)
Sunset over Tampa Bay from a Current Hotel room balcony
Don’t sleep on Tampa. The views here are gorgeous, there is great history and interesting museums, and lots of ways to experience the waterfront, including a river cruise, marinas, and beautiful beaches. South Beach was nice in the 20s, but Tampa is the place to go in your 40s when an easy going city is preferred over the nightlife and bar scene of Miami. Read on for recommendations for this under-rated town.
Places to stay
The Current pool and beach
Looking for a charming place to stay, off the beaten path, with great food? You can’t go wrong with The Current, an Autograph Collection Marriott property with astounding views, two great waterfront restaurants, a lovely pool, and even a small patch of beach. There’s a Westin, Doubletree, and Holiday Inn not far, but, unless you’re on a budget, go with The Current for a more upscale experience.
The Tampa Marriott Water Street is a great alternative if you want to be closer to the action of downtown and more proximate to places like Ybor City. They have a rooftop pool and the establishment is family friendly. Two luxury options nearby are the JW Marriott Tampa Water Street and the new Edition, Tampa’s first five star hotel that opened in 2022.
Where to eat
Even if you don’t stay at The Current, it’s worth a trip to either of their restaurants, Julian on the lobby level and Casa Cami on the rooftop, which has outstanding quesadillas and taquitos, as well as more elevated fare. Be sure to make a reservation for the latter, as this trendy restaurant and bar attracts an energetic and hip group of customers coming for not just the great views, but stellar food and cocktails.
If you take in the downtown or riverwalk sights, dinner at Michelin starred Lilac is a splurge-worthy option, and at $150 for a four course tasting menu, some might even consider this a great deal!

Things to do
Walk along the Riverwalk or take a hop on hop off boat cruise tour to see Tampa from a different perspective. While walking the Riverwalk, stop to check out the Tampa Museum of Art, which has a fabulous gift shop, or the Glazer Children’s Museum - these are great options for a rainy day.
If someone in your group is a history buff, check out Ybor City, founded in 1886. You can get there by taking the free TECO Line Streetcar (an adventure in and of itself) from downtown Tampa. Take a cigar tour, check out art galleries, or hear some live music.
