Downtown Dallas in a Day: A Walkable Itinerary

The 30-foot statue “Eye” by artist Tony Tasset

Dallas is sprawling and impossible to cover in just two days, but even a day and a half gave us a taste of the city. We were there for the weekend to celebrate a friend’s birthday, but also planned to fit in some sightseeing. By focusing on a couple of walkable neighborhoods and nearby sights, we maximized our time without feeling rushed, and still discovered plenty of Dallas’ history, food, and personality.

Where to stay

The JW Marriott downtown is centrally located, has beautifully designed interior spaces, and a relaxing rooftop pool.

View from the room at the JW Marriott

Upgrade to a concierge level room (included if you’re Bonvoy Platinum or higher) to take advantage of the lounge, which features an extensive breakfast buffet and evening hors d'oeuvres.

Alternative places to stay instead include:

The Joule is a hip and beautifully appointed hotel across from the Eye statue.

The Adolphus is a historic hotel, open since 1912.

If you enjoy art and sleek design, consider The Thompson.

Places to eat

Barbecue from Terry Black’s was outstanding - no long lines, friendly service, generous portions, and flavorful meat.

If you’re north of downtown visiting Southern Methodist University, grab a burger at the historic Goff’s Burgers, a nostalgic landmark with historical significance for our family.

Things to do

Visit the Sixth Floor Museum to learn the history of JFK’s assassination and tour the site where it took place. With more time, we would have taken the 3-hour JFK Assassination Tour to see more in addition to the museum, including Oswald’s Rooming House.

Walk around Deep Ellum and enjoy graffiti art, two great BBQ spots (Terry Black’s above and Pecan Lodge, which we’ll try next time.)

Visit the Dallas Museum of Art. Then walk around the Dallas Arts District to see sculptures and historic buildings when you’re done.

See the Wells Fargo building known as Fountain Place, striking when you view it within the cityscape and even more interesting when you get close and see the incredible fountains that encompass the building.

Next time…

A major flight delay made this two day stay a one day stay, so it’ll have to be next time for the following planned attractions and meals:

  • Crown Block (sweeping views, seafood tower and champagne at the Reunion Tower)
